Styling a Bow!

The other day during a crochet lesson we featured a pattern on how to make a crocheted bow. Everyone loved it, cause it was a fun and easy project and c'mmon who doesn't adore bows? Panagiota and I also brainstormed on fun ways to style this project and other bows that happen to be in our possession! There are infinite ways one can do it, and so we decided to show you how to style a bow our way!

first of all you can style it on your hair!

Bow craziness...Do you like bows? Do you want to make a simple crocheted bow? It's easy!! So it's, pattern time! For the small red crocheted bow above, we used the idea of this free pattern, (thank you lovely lady of Creative Yarn!), but we changed it a little. So the pattern is this:

Bow: Ch19, sc in second ch from hook, and in each ch across, turn.

Row 1: ch1, sc in next st and in each across, turn.

Rows 2-9: repeat row1.

Work a sc across the edge of the bow.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Bow center: Ch9, sc in second ch from hook, and in each ch across.

Finishing: Sew bow center around bow, gathering the middle of the bow and

joining edges of bow center.

Weave in ends.

Double Crochets

Project: Yarn Lovin Afternoons

Soooo the day before yesterday was "la premiere" of our new project, Yarn Lovin Afternoons @ Theia Lab! We met some wonderful ladies, had some tea, chit-and-chatted and of course we went through the basics of crochet. There were 10 students, 3 out of whom already knew how to crochet! The first lesson was, what else, the basic stitches (slip knot, chain). We practiced a lot and made wonderful bracelets out of many chain stitches.

New Year's Resolution: 2012

Being a team is a state of living for us, we like dreaming and planning together, we like working together, and spending our time off together, so this year we decided to make some "new year's resolutions" together! We the Double Crochets! And here we are sharing them with you.

blogging more frequently. Maybe do a blog makeover also? Spending some more time on our blog is something we both wish to do, although it can be so tough with the everyday routines!
keep having fun and dancing more. We both adore dancing and we are proud members of The Rollin Foxes, the rock 'n' roll dance company of Athens!! All we have to do is keep on rollin!
do more collaborations. Yes! we have so much talented friends that would be a pity not to work with them on fun and creative projects this year...
do more outfit photo shoots for our blog. mmmm yeah okay
set up a Double Crochets online shop. At the moment all of our creations are made exclusively for gifts and friends, it would be nice to do it for more professional reasons, too.
document our crochet meetings. We already do this, but sometimes we get too obsessed with what we do and forget to document it! With the new project at Theia Lab, starting tomorrow, we have to promise to ourselves that we will shoot some more photos!
"spread the thread"!! This is the tagline of our blog and the main reason we started our crochet club, to teach more people how to crochet/knit and spread the love for needle work!!
organize a yarn exhibition. With pictures of our favorite crafts and crafters, and some actual crocheted/knitted objects.
participate in a local craft bazaar. There is the Vintage and Crafts bazaar organized by Les Broderies Anglaises, happening at our favorite district (Exarheia), and we really love it, it's a dream of ours to participate to a bazaar of this kind.
crafting more. crochet more, aaaaaand more, and more, and more!!!! okay some more knitting,sewing,embroidering would be awesome, too! Make do and mend more....

we want you to meet...

..."yarn lovin afternoons"!! It's our new project! But first thing first, let me give you the whole picture: Panagiota and I, were really busy on December, and we took an unplanned break from the blog and the crochet club. Then the Christmas arrived and we were super happy, had so much fun and we relaxed (just a tiny bit), everything felt right, and it just might be the new plans that were on the way! And one fine Christmassy afternoon we met Theia! (in greek means aunt! ain't that cute?) and we decided to collaborate to bring some really cool people together and turn them into a group of cool yarn lovin people! hehehe. So once a week, on Saturdays around 17.30 we will be meeting at Theia lab (an amazing place at 59 Thermopylon & Paramythias str, Athens Greece) and we will be holding crochet lessons full of information and stuff that would give any crafty human being, yarngasms!! Sounds exciting? We knoooow! If you want to learn more on how the "Yarn Lovin Afternoons" lessons will evolve just come and visit us at Theia lab!

Our lovely strange places to crochet/knit

Panagiota and myself, are crazy busy bees at this time of year, and we find it hard to save time for crocheting/knitting, that's the main reason why you can find us crocheting/knitting at the strangest places! Most commonly you will meet us crocheting in the bus, the metro, at bus stations. The second most common place is the cafeterias, and lastly in parks, public spaces and benches! Wherever we have some time to spend it crafting, usually while doing something else, we just do it.

Here are some photos of needle work actually happening, and some photos of us exaggerating with the concept of strange places, just for fun!

Human Being Creative

Back in June we started a post series "Human Being Creative" The deal was that from time to time we will share stuff that insanely creative people make, preferable about crocheting, knitting, embroidery and sewing. The first post was about Penelopy a fashionista and blogger. Today I would love to introduce to you the creative duet: Grandmama's reLOVED! Rember them from this post?! They are two sisters that live and create in Athens Greece, that are well known from the vintage and crafts bazaars in Athens and for their avant gard and original pieces. I totally adore their vintage but also handmade accessories and clothing. This time some terrific crocheted head pieces and colars were the reason we chose to feature them here on Double Crochets.

Wip!!

Long time no see!
Since my life is a work in progress, balancing between courses and searching for a real job, I didn't manage to write a proper post till now! That's why I decided it's the perfect timing to blog about our yarn projects in progress! Let me tell you, that Double Crochets are on a crochet/knitting fever... it must be the chilly weather! Even though our time is little, we manage to crochet in our lovely strange places (buses, bus stops, the metro, anywhere).
I am about to finish a granny square blanket, while at the same time I am crocheting a secret gift (can't reveal it,sorry), and planning to start this week a v-neck sweater for my boyfriend. Panagiota is knitting a sweet bolero on the cutest shade of olive green (using circular needles), and already planning to start something new. In the meanwhile our crochet club members are all working on scarves, cowls, tobacco cases and more! How awesome is that?!

Granny squares, you can never have too many of them! More! Mooore!

Here is the link to a program my dad made to generate the possible color combos for granny squares!! It's not totally finished yet, but we are working on it. (I am posting about is soon). You can also check my progress on Ravelry, or search for some awesome free patterns. (add me if you have an account there). This is the pattern I've used for the granny squares, with this yarn and a 3.5 crochet hook, and this is the pattern I am planning to use for the v-neck sweater (giggles of happiness). The sleeveless sweater will be my first "wearable" thing to crochet and I am really really, rrreeelly excited!

so I have to leave you now, to get back to my granny squares! Hoping that everyone is having a sweet lazy Sunday, and wishing courage and strength for the week to come.

so there is this thing on tumblr called "Fuck Yeah___insert anything__" and it is a way to find a tumbl-blog that posts stuff only related to the ___insert anything___ topic! Two of my favourites are: "fuck yeah crochet goat" and "fuck yeah knitting alpaca"! As you can tell they are memes about crochet and knitting , and they write funny facts and stuff about them!

Summer love

Hello!!

How are you? (have you seen the new blogger's dashboard?) and how was your summer? Mine was terrific! Some weeks ago I visited my sweet cousins at Aigina island! We did some catch up, we cooked together, laughed, swim, rest by the sea, had a blast!!! We did enjoy some mornings with a cup of coffee and chocolate croissant. nom nom! Aaaand we did some knitting by the sea! As you already know, Marietta and I, like to crochet or knit anywhere (literally at any place!) One place I haven't tried before, and was found out to be pretty awesome, was the beach!!

My younger cousin wanted to learn how to knit, and I was more than happy to show her, while it happened that among the sunscreen and the underwater masks, we've packed needles and yarn. The scenery was ideal and so.... we started knitting lessons at the beach! It was a little crazy but most of all relaxing!

what's your top 5 strangest places you've ever tried knitting or crocheting?

The perfect photos of me and my younger cousin Marietta (yes they have the same name with my sister Marietta) were shot by my older cousin Marina, a very talented architect and bon viver! Thanks for everything girls! Now that I am back in Athens I'm trying to enjoy myself until I get back to the crazy life of autumn. Double Crochets will soon start meeting again in Athens and new projects are about to begin!! Wherever you are, find some time, grab your needles or hooks, choose a nice pattern and let's spread the thread! September is here, autumn is at the door, we'll soon be wearing socks, warm pullovers and drinking hot tea while we knit! But summer isn't totally over yet!! let's keep some summer in our hearts!

Double Crochets in Athens News

Last week we were on the news! eeeeeeek! Marie Zaharaki wrote an amazing article on Athens News about crafting groups in Athens and we were really proud to be among two well known ones. We received a questionnaire with questions about us, our group and some crocheting issues!

here are some of our favorite answers:

How did you learn how to crochet/knit?
Marietta:I remember myself being taught by my mom how to hold the crochet hook since i was a little girl and doing simple "paint by number" style embroidery during the summer vacations. Panagiota is mostly self-taught and the one that talked me into crocheting and taught me more stuff.
Panagiota: The first time I sat down and finally started learning how to knit was when I wanted to make a scarf for my boyfriend at the time. I asked my mother and grandmother, who both showed me how to start, the basics so to speak. The rest I found on the internet. There are too many sites and tutorial videos on how to knit. After learning how to knit, crochet was next! Internet was again my tutor. Now crocheting hooked my heart!

When did you decide to start coming together as a group?
Marietta: I always considered Panagiota and myself a creative duo and literally a team since we were toddlers. Some time before 2008 I started reading lots of crafting and vintage related blogs! And the whole movement inspired me! I kept trying to talk my sister into creating a serious crochet group and have a more serious attitude to it. A year later I also persuaded two friends of ours to be in the crochet club and then it was reality! Panagiota was our leader and teacher ,me, Eleni and Tonia were the students/members!

What benefits are there in working as a group?
Panagiota: Well when you are in a group like ours the benefits are more than one can imagine, the most important for me is that one inspires the other and together we are moving forward and stay motivated! more ideas are coming on the table and we are having fun at the same time.

Do you feel comfortable to take your needle work out when with other friends or visiting someone?
Panagiota: We feel totally comfortable with that, but we don't like getting too antisocial, that means that when we're with friends that don't knit or crochet we prefer having fun with them so we don't crochet/knit!

What have people's reactions been like if you have taken your work out?
Marietta: There are really surprising reactions from people watching us crocheting! They ask us what is it that that we do, if they can buy something from us,even if we can teach them! Old ladies usually get too excited, they say that we are going to make super good brides and how lucky the men that will marry us will be... They also give us advice about what yarns to use, how to finish our project, then they ask our names and say goodbye! It's so cool! In the cafeterias, where we do our crochet club meetings, the waitresses will every time comment on our projects, and also happened sometimes that they ask us to teach them how to crochet in their lunch break! We also have taught two or three complete strangers how to crochet, we are still friends with some of them!

Marie (a knitter herself) wrote a wonderful article about craft meet up groups and commented on if it is socially acceptable to do needle work in public.There were some amazing ladies answering those issues and it is very interesting to read about crafts gaining ground in Athens.You can read here the article in Athens News (the oldest english spoken newspaper in Greece!) Yesterday we had a photo shoot for Dimi's new blog and an extra tiring name-brainstorming. God, finding *the* cool name is hard! But totally worth it, I am super excited for it and really can't wait till it's finished. I'm pretty sure it'll be the awesomest blog ever! A photo an hour, almost...

For quite some time now, I wanted to make this "a photo an hour" project , in which you must take one photo an hour for the whole day! I always forget to finish it, although I shoot a lot of photos through the day , like everyday! When it comes for the project I keep forgetting it. Yesterday I almost did it, almost...

8 a.m.: (missing photo) woke up

9 a.m.: (missing photo) having breakfast

10 a.m. : having coffee with Panagiota while waiting Vicky (to go shopping)

11 a.m. : Vicky is here and she is trying some cool shoes on

12 p.m. : I haven't been shopping since forever, and it is ecstatic

1 p.m. : We are still, searching for dresses, but we are not that focused...

2 p.m. : (missing photo) Having lunch, at a really nice place

3 p.m. : Athens is really hot but we have to get some sewing supplies at a street called "Sau Sages"

4 p.m. : Taking the train for the way back home

5 p.m. : (missing photo) Home at last, having some rest/mail checked

6 p.m. : Playing with the newborn kitties and their mom

7 p.m. : (missing photo) We were supposed to go the Knitting meeting of this month with the lovely ladies of the Raverly community but we were too tired... and didn't :(

8 p.m. : Just had a haircut!!

9 p.m. : (missing photo) Drinking ouzo with Dimi and Vero

10 p.m. : The metro to home, and Dimi's vertical planking!

11 p.m. : (missing photo) reading favorite blogs, pin some photos on Pinterest and other internet stuff...

12 p.m. : (missing photo) yogurt with maple syrup (inspiration of the moment) and watching "four rooms"

so this is my almost "a photo an hour"!! Promise to do it again properly

big deal!

Every time I want to post something here I really make it a big deal, I will type the text in a draft and I will try to figure out if my english are nice, I will have to decide how to sort the images out, and then sometimes the text won't be okay, and I will have to struggle with blogger and it will break my nerves, and I will have to edit the whole body in html to put proper spaces between the images... Okay okay I don't want to be grouchy, all I am trying to say is that I am missing something here!! Maybe I should just try to relax and post! A million times all this frustration keeps me from posting, and it's a pitty!
Today I just singed in to fix the problem with the images in the kip's post (don't know if you noticed,,,sorry about that!), to say hi! and share these concerns about posting!

KiP in Athens 2011

Last week on the 11th of June, there was the world wide Knit in Public Day that is being celebrated for a whole week! Anyone can host a KiP (knitting in public event) or participate in a local KiP. As long as there was no other event around, me and Panagiota, decided to organize a KiP event to celebrate the wwKiPDay and that was on Sunday. Some knit friends didn't make it to the event, mostly because of their hangover.. and all the members of our crochet club was decimated off the hotness and the last night's booze. Yet, we were actually 12 people, 9 out of whom did knit!! I know it's not such a success but we are super happy for it! hahaha

The park was pretty cool , although it was a hot day, and surprisingly enough the street noise couldn't reach us. The best thing one could do was to walk on the grass barefoot and enjoy the sweet breeze, while Panagiota was teaching the basics of knitting and crocheting. As you can see there are 3 boys that learned how to knit! Cool ha? In my opinion they did pretty amazing... I'm very proud of everyone that learned how to knit that day.

It was pretty relaxing and funny, Manolis and Dimitris were the first to arrive, and refused to knit... or to learn how to knit, but they were there to amuse us with their first class jokes. Later on , Elisavet, Eleni, Dimitra, Marios and Christos joined me, Panagiota, Panagiotis, Orestis, Veronica, Manolis and Dimitris. We laughed, we chatted, we knitted, we crocheted, we ate Panagiota's homebaked cookies and shot some pictures. It was 6 in the afternoon when we finally decided that it was time to pack and leave the park, but then we had some visitors of the sweetest kind!! A shiny black cocker that wanted to check my progress and a little girl that wanted to learn how to crochet! hehehe

tattoo: polaroid edition

Hi there! Do you have a tattoo? I had my first one this week... I was thinking about it in the last few years and it has been on my "new year resolution" list a few times! This week at last I cross it of my list! (don't you just love it when that happens?) I had my favorite Sx70 polaroid land camera, a spiral and a ball of yarn tattooed on my forearm. yeeeeei! ♥ So I will share with you some photos of my knitting and appliances related tattoo , and grab the situation to show you some really old stuff.

my story with polaroids starts when I was a little kid. My father had bought a Polaroid 600 and we were playing with it all the time, but it got "too expensive and old" and nobody cared about it for the next 20 years! But when I was at the Photography school I heard of Samaras' polaroids and got super excited, I bought some film and searched for the old camera. I shot a lot! and then one day the Polaroid announces that their factories are shutting down... mio dio!

and then the impossible project arrived..

Everybody started "save polaroid" campaigns asking polaroid not to close! C'mmon we want our toys! There were of course fuji's instant films but they're not the same(love them too)! Anyway it seemed like nobody cared, and then... the impossible project guys arrived... and brought some new films. I bought some from the first flush to contribute, there were nice, although I think after that the whole thing got too commercialized and hype. But that fact didn't prevent me from loving polaroid. I asked my friend Nikos to make me a polaroid ring and he did! As one can tell, polaroid was part of my life, and for that I was considering having a tattoo...

Human Being Creative

Today I think I am starting a new posts series by introducing: "Human Being Creative". From time to time I will share stuff that insanely creative people make, preferable about crocheting, knitting, embroidery and sewing!

This post is about Penelopy from Fashion Architect that took part in a project named: "Kiehl’s Friends Create for a Cause" and she came with two creative tote's designs. The project has ecological purposes, as that for each bag the nine participants-artists created, there will be a donation of 100 euro to the realization of an ecological workshop for children living downtown.
Penelopy is an architect and a well known fashion blogger, that chose sewing and embroidery for her creations.

Scissors and Cutters

Hi there!
Today I want to share with you our collection of scissors.
A couple of months ago I bought my new favorite little stork scissors (it's not that little) that is mostly for embroidery. And then I realized we do have lots of scissors and for different reasons in my house.

The truth is that we have an affair with the scissors that goes way back in time. Since my grandpa was a barber and my grandma a custom dressier, they both used scissors in their daily routine; and now we do too! And of course as true old-stuff-suckers we have a nice and neat collections of scissors! I want you to note that I didn't add in this collection: kitchen scissors, a couple of other well sharped tailoring scissors, pruning shears, and other types of shears that we proudly own! hahaha enjoy!

The other day, a good friend gave me three old photographer's cutters and with that addition I believe my collection is heading to completion with success!

I really love the wavy pinking edge of that last cutter, which was used for the old-school wavy edges on photos. I've always wanted one like this, too pity that the head of the cutter is missing. Of course that means that I am on a mission to find a new one!

Summer is like already here! I know it's hard for me to get used it,too.(although I love summer!) Today was a hot day, and I was super tired from the whole week, so I decided to spend the day relaxing with friends. There was food of course, massively yummy, and sweets too! And when the time passed and the sweet breeze made our living a little cooler we sat in the balcony chit chatting and laughing, while our moves were slow and sleepy. It was perfect I may say ,that's why I wanted to share it with you.

Picnic!

Hallo there! I know it's been ages since the last time we blogged, but I guess we aren't used to it at all, cause I have toooons of stuff to blog about (thrifts, projects, interviews, photos) ...and I believe Panagiota too. Anyway , it's a promise that I will blog more often!

This last Sunday we had a vintage picnic party at alsos Veikou at Galatsi, the weather was just perfect , the people were the right ones and the mood chill! Hirollers were there to play for us (and for the other visitors of the park,also, who were just magnetized by our terrific group) and the Rollin Foxes were there also to dance and of course to eat some of the delicious sandwiches and pop corn and stuff the ladies had prepared.
I woke up early to prepare my own basket of goods. I took my thermos, my favorite afghan, wore my polka dots skirt, and off to the park!! Here are just some of the photos I shot that sunny sunny day! Let's do it again people!

2nd Vintage & Crafts Bazaar at Exarhia!

This weekend the 2nd Vintage & Crafts Bazaar took place at the Indigo cafe at Exarhia. Les Broderies Anglaises (Viveta and Irini) organized it for the second time with complete success! third day of the Second Annual Knitting and Crochet Blogging Week!!!

hello again from panagiota :)

how organised are my yarns??

ever since i started bringing home with me balls of yarn, needles, hooks, lovely buttons etc, i realised i have to have a place for them as they were starting to take over my room!

so in the beginning i had a big beautiful wooden box to keep them! and for a while it all was good!

but then they started multiplying.!!

well the truth is that after all these years i have many many many balls of yarn....

so with the help of my loving sister we organised them in one of my bed's drawers!

and now they look a bit like this (there are actually a lot more still in my beautiful wooden box)

of course every time i want to start a new project i go searching in and it needs some time to put them back there...

so i'm not really organised...

what i wish is that i had a whole room for my projects,
filled with lovely jars of buttons and ribbons, and my yarns would definatelly be on huge shelves !!

i guess i just have to wait to move to my own house!!

it's the second day of the Second Annual Knitting and Crochet Blogging Week!!!

today i'm looking back and think what i've accomplished in the last year concerning knitting or crocheting!

So, Panagiota here, i've been a crochet+knitting lover for the last 7 years,
but it's true that the last year has been a real chalenge for me and my skills,
not so much concerning the technique but as how to make others love crochet+knitting!

since september marietta and i created a crochet club,
with which we really wanted to spread the word about crocheting knitting.!

we started with dearest friends and since we didn't have a particular place to meet we've been crocheting in the most unusual places in athens (caffeterias, university, libraries, bus, metro....etc)

(you have to bear in mind that crocheting in public is not a common thing in athens)

In order to teach my friends and all the unknown people that just asked while watching the crochet happiness, i've become a better crochetter myself!

I'm proud to say that in this last year i've taught a lot more people

how to crochet than i have in the last 7 ones!

of course when you are a teacher you have to become better every day!

so----> this is my skill, this is what i'm proud of!
my crochet and knitting teaching techniques!! :)

p.s we really loved all the posts of our fellow bloggers arround the globe for the first and second day of the Second Annual Knitting and Crochet Blogging Week!!

A Tale of Two Yarns – 2KCBWDAY1

If you are knitting or crocheting you will know already that on of the most important factor for your projects is what else, the yarn you use! I am literally in love with yarns!
There are so many favorite types, colors, feelings.. aaaah I could be writing for hours.!
There are yarns of soft hand and comfortable feeling or more hard and “clumsy”, I particularly love the fluffiness or bulkiness in yarns.
So the thing is I never really pay attention to what brand my yarn is, looking through all my yarns I realized that most of them (if not all of them…) are “naked” I don't really hold onto their tags.

So this is a story of this adored pink yarn with which I made a lovely cabled shaped scarf. I kind of remember it had a name like candy-pink candy something.
It was fluffy, for big sized needles and I simply haven't seen anything like it before!
It was a day with my sister when I first saw it and I was quite disappointed to know that not only was there only one ball left in the shop but it was also really ….expensive.
I was in love!
After a day or two , I went back and bought it!
As I always do, many weeks passed until I started thinking of what I could do with it.!
And finally I decided ! So i was searching for an easy scarf pattern for my lovely pink candy yarn and i bumbed into this great free project in Stich DC blog. (of course one ball was not enough for the size I wanted and is now in my unfinished projects…)

Another yarn I really love is the kangaroo flamet (30% wool, 70% acrylic) which is really nice to handle, it comes in many combination of colors but the one I used is the pink-blue-purple one!
It's really soft and bulky and it's size changes as you go!

First post ever.

Hello this is double crochets,

we are two sisters from Athens, in our mid twenties, that happen to be happy yarn lovers. And this is our very first post! We decided to write this first post in English, but you have to expect that some of the posts to come will be in Greek. By coincidence today is the day that the 2nd annual knit and crochet blog week starts! Learned about this just yesterday and we decided to hurry up a bit the publishing of our first post. Our second one will be about the topic of the blog week (coming soon, just wait patiently)

We are rather old in blog-o-sphere, never managed to make a blog work, maybe the reason is that we didn't have an actual purpose, now we have! Our goal is to spread the word about crocheting and knitting among our friends and acquaintances here in Athens, Greece and as far as this blog can reach, since we both have friends all around the globe and would love to have even more! Funny fact: our first choice of name was "Spread the Thread", (which will be the tagline for our projects) but we finally came up with Double Crochets and was instant love.

The double crochet (abbreviated dc) is one of the most common crochet stitches and is about twice as tall as a single crochet. Sooo daDA! hahah (Here are some links for how to double crochet 1, 2)
